SEO

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the set of processes used to increase the perceived importance of your website by the search engines.  It might be that you have a great website but if nobody can find it, then what’s the point.  As in the brick-and-mortar world where location is everything, you can take these concepts to the internet.  Everyone knows Rodeo Drive and Wall Street. Likewise, everyone knows Google.com and Amazon.com.

The idea is to get your website on the map with the focus on your business (or your personal interests).

Because most people use search engines to find sites for them, we have to look at how we can let search engines know we are relevant and important.

You have two things that you need to do.  On page optomization and off page optomization.

On page optomization is about the placement, density and internal linking of relevant content.

Off page optomization is about getting relevant in-bound (one-way preferable) links to your site, and different pages on your site.

This is an over simplification, and I am by no means an expert (at least I am not going to portray myself as one).
